Martin came to work with the Balkan Team in 1987 after immigrating from Patzcuaro, Mexico. He came to the USA with no knowledge of the sub-surface plumbing industry. However, Martin did possess intelligence, drive, and the determination to succeed in pursuit of his American Dream. Martin started out in an entry level position as a laborer to assist a sewer installation crew.
Martin steadily earned the respect of his peers, and likewise gained skills in performing sewer and water main line installations. Not long afterwards he taught himself to become skilled as a backhoe operator. He then quickly advanced to become a Crew Foremen. There came a time when Martin could perform literally any type of sewer and water main installation. Martin’s installations easily met NYC DEP and NYC DOB requirements, and the satisfaction of the Client as well.
Martin’s Skills Grow Along With Balkan’s Growth And Success
The company quickly grew, with the help of Martin’s high quality installations. With that growth came a promotion for Martin Arias to the position of Field Supervisor. In that way his expertise became available on all installations, and to each sewer and water main crew.

Martin Arias Explains His Journey To The American Dream
“My name is Martin Arias, and I want to share my story of how I came to work at Balkan Sewer And Water Main. My journey started back in 1987, when I arrived in the USA from Mexico. I didn’t speak any English back then. Additionally, I knew absolutely nothing about plumbing. Even so Balkan gave me an opportunity to prove myself, and I want to thank Balkan for that.
There are so many jobs I had before I came to work at Balkan. Just before I came to Balkan, I was a dishwasher at a restaurant, and I wasn’t really happy back then. Then one day on my way home, I passed by Balkan’s office. Back then it was located on 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill. So, I walked into the office and I saw David Balkan, and I asked him if he was hiring anyone. Dave actually told me “No, we’re not hiring”, so I left…
But, I came back two weeks later and I asked him again! This time Dave hired me as a regular laborer, even though I had no experience or any skills at all. After a few years I became a foreman, and then a backhoe operator. About 14 years ago I advanced myself to the position of Field Supervisor. This is the same position that I’m still happily doing to this very day. It really is my “American Dream”, the one I had when I first came here over 30 years ago.
Balkan always does things the right way, that’s why I’ve been here so long. They are very good people, very truthful, and honest. When they promise something that always do it, and that’s why I’m still here. I’m hoping to remain here until the day I retire.”
