Sewer Check Valve Video

Every house in the NYC area has a main sewer pipe. The main house sewer pipe carries wastewater from the home to the city’s main sewer line. The public sewer then carries the waste water to a treatment plant. Most homeowners do not give this process a second thought, because when everything is working as it should, there is no need to. However, when there is a problem, it can wreak havoc on a home and can cost thousands of dollars in damage. This can be prevented with a sewer check valve, and this video shows how simple it is.

Typically, the wastewater leaving the house goes in one direction, from the house to the street, but there are issues that arise that can make things go the other way. Heavy rains and flooding will sometimes cause the public sewer lines to fill up with rainwater, meaning there is no place for the home’s sewer water to go. Other times there could be a clog, which causes waste water to back up. As water seeks its own level, the first place it may backup is in your sewer pit.

When this happens without a check valve, the waste water will simply come right back where it came from, at the lowest point of the home. Toilets and showers on the lowest levels will usually get a backflow of water and sewage, which often overflows onto the floors. Floors, walls, and belongings can be irreparably damaged, causing stress, and financial hardship for the homeowner.

This can be easily avoided with the simple, and relatively inexpensive installation of one of these sewer check valves. It only allows the waste water to flow in one direction, protecting the home from any backflow for prolonged periods of time. Of course, to ensure the installation works properly, it should be installed by an experienced and licensed plumber. If installed incorrectly a sewer valve can potentially create more problems than it solves.
