An emergency Queens sewer problem threatened to interrupt sewer services for a large housing project in Far Rockaway. Over one hundred families depended on an expert sewer line repair for resumption of normal sewer service. Various parties had to work together addressing different aspects of the sewer problem in order for the sewer line repair to be addressed professionally and move along seamlessly. Cooperation between all concerned parties is vital in situations such as this.
Locating The Sewer Problem
The owner of the property called in their trusted sewer cleaner CMI Services. CMI came promptly and utilized state-of-the-art equipment such as a camera able to easily move down a large NYC sewer located on the property, and accurately depict the condition and location of branch line connections. After attempting to clean the sewer with all sized machines and tools only then did CMI utilize their specialty camera to pinpoint the location of the sewer problem and also diagnose that there was a buried manhole underneath the parking lot area. Locating the point of a sewer problem prior to excavating for a sewer line repair can save thousands of dollars.
Uncovering A Buried Manhole
Balkan Sewer And Water Main Service used a metal detector to verify the point of the buried manhole prior to excavating. It seems the grade of the parking lot had been raised over the years, with asphalt covering the manhole. Part of the sewer line repair was raising the elevation of the manhole and reinstalling the manhole cover, this would help avoid a future sewer problem.
Working Around And Inside A Drywell
After the sewer problem was exposed it was found to lye just outside and underneath an existing drywell. To perform the sewer line repair would require some ingenuity on the part of the sewer contractor. Balkan had to excavate on either side of the outside of the drywell and even excavate inside the drywell to expose all the defective sewer pipe. At the end of the 1st workday Balkan was able to remove a section of the old sewer line and provide temporary relief for the residents. All excavated material was carted away and dumped at an approved dump site, and the site was left barricaded and steel plated at the end of the work day.
The Sewer Line Repair
The actual sewer repair was performed using 8″ extra heavy cast iron pipe domestically produced by Charlotte Pipe which is located in North Carolina. Almost 20′ of sewer line was replaced from approximately 5′ outside the manhole to the far side of the drywell. In addition Balkan repaired some broken areas of the drywell and wrapped the drywell in a special filter fabric. All excavations were then backfilled carefully with stone with the same filter fabric placed around the stone. The purpose of the filter fabric is to prevent sand or soot form blocking or clogging the drywell. The end result of the sewer line repair was also a drywell that would function better than it ever did.
Restoring Disturbed Areas
Because the owner had a long and trusted relationship with Cardone Concrete, Balkan had communication with Cardone on a number of occasions and coordinated how the job site would be left after backfill and clean-up. All excavated areas were left down 8″, but barricaded and plated for Cardone Concrete to perform a timely and professional restoration. Working together in a professional and respectful manner with other contractors is a Balkan trademark. Total client satisfaction is always the main goal.
A Successful Sewer Line Repair
